Priorities
Safe, Clean, On-Time Service
BART ridership is less than half of what it used to be. While this is a result of COVID and changing work/commute patterns, we must all acknowledge that some of the ridership decline is because many people don’t feel safe on BART.
Creating a safe environment requires a combination of solutions. We need well deployed uniformed personnel, including those in the Ambassador program. We also need to be smarter about deploying mental health resources. I am a long-term champion of investment in mental health services. An effective response to mental health incidents on BART is a must, to keep all parties safe.
Keeping Fares Affordable
To keep fares affordable requires two things: 1) strong fiscal management and accountability, and 2) diversifying BART’s revenue stream so rider fares aren’t solely responsible for the system’s financial health. Focusing our resources on reliability and affordability and being strategic on appropriate, community-serving smart growth around transit stations can accomplish these goals.
Responsible Fiscal Management
As an Alameda County Transportation Commissioner I have worked to ensure that tax funds are spent as promised to voters. I will continue to be a fiscal watchdog in making decisions on the BART budget. And let’s do more to help small, local businesses compete for BART contracts.
